The cloth

Brass

Benin City, Edo State

Brass has been cast in Benin City for centuries by the guild of casters who worked for the Oba's court. A piece begins as a wax model, packed in clay and fired until the wax runs out, leaving a cavity the molten brass fills. The mould is broken to release the casting, so every mould makes exactly one piece. The metal starts bright and dulls to a deeper gold as it is handled.

Made from Brass

We have nothing in Brass in the shop today. New pieces land in small runs, and this is the cloth we are asked for most.
