The cloth
Adire
Abeokuta, Ogun State
Adire is resist-dyed indigo cloth, made by Yoruba women in south-western Nigeria for well over a century. Patterns are drawn in cassava paste or stitched and tied before the cloth meets the dye, so the indigo takes everywhere the resist does not. Each piece carries the hand that made it: no two lengths repeat exactly, and the deep blue softens with wear rather than fading away.
Made from Adire
We have nothing in Adire in the shop today. New pieces land in small runs, and this is the cloth we are asked for most.
