The cloth
Ankara
Ankara is industrially printed cotton, and its history is not a straight line. The wax-resist technique came from Indonesian batik, was industrialised by Dutch manufacturers in the nineteenth century, and found its market in West Africa, where designs were named, given meanings, and made local by the people who wore them. It is the youngest cloth on this site and the most widely worn, and calling it traditional or foreign both miss what it actually is.
Made from Ankara
We have nothing in Ankara in the shop today. New pieces land in small runs, and this is the cloth we are asked for most.
