The cloth
Akwete
Akwete, Abia State
Akwete is handwoven on tall upright looms by Igbo women in Akwete, in the south east. The weaver works standing, building the pattern by hand as she goes rather than following a punched card, which is why two lengths of the same design are never quite identical. Motifs are named and owned, a weaver who invents one is known for it. The cloth is dense, slightly stiff when new, and softens with wearing.
Made from Akwete
We have nothing in Akwete in the shop today. New pieces land in small runs, and this is the cloth we are asked for most.
